What is Brachiocephalic Dopplerography?

Brachiocephalic doppler artery ultrasound is a method of ultrasound diagnosis of the main blood vessels in the neck (which are responsible for supplying blood to the brain). During the examination, the total, external, internal carotid, and spinal arteries are visualized, and hemodynamics are examined using a color Doppler scan.

When is it needed?

  • The main indication is to assess the blood flow in the carotid artery to avoid the risk of stroke. Early detection of carotid artery stenosis will help doctors prevent stroke;
  • Presence of risk factors for the development of stroke: arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, hyperlipidemia, heredity, transient ischemic attacks;
  • Assessment of the condition of carotid arteries after carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting;
  • Before the upcoming heart surgery;
  • Other symptoms that indicate changes in blood flow through the cervical arteries (headache, different blood pressure in the upper extremities, tumor-like growths in the neck).
  • To assess the condition of the arteries and the condition of the small subcutaneous capillaries, as well as the distribution of blood in the lumen of the canal. Any abnormal abnormality is noticeable.
  • How to scan the brachiocephalic arteries?
  • Duplex scanning of the brachiocephalic arteries is performed with an ultrasound machine in the supine position. The ultrasound probe is guided along the neck.

Results. Visual assessment of changes in vascular lumen allows early diagnosis of the disease. Identification of the pathological process is possible in any part of the vascular basin.

The following properties of the brachiocephalic arteries can be obtained by scanning:

  • transparency, presence of stenosis (occlusion) or occlusion (blockage of an artery);
  • presence of deformations (bends, cuts);
  • diameter and vascular wall mobility;
  • thickness, surface shape, and homogeneity.

Duplex scanning of the brachiocephalic arteries can be used in conjunction with other tests to detect narrowed or blocked blood vessels in other parts of the body.
