Negative Symptoms of Eating Too Much Meat

The Korean Vegetarian Association estimates that the proportion of vegetarians in Korea in 2019 is about 2% (1 to 1.5 million people). That's more than double the 1% from 10 years ago. If you include the vegetarian-friendly population who prefers vegetarian diets, it increases by around 25%.

Of course, most people enjoy meat, some of them eat too much meat. The debate about whether eating meat is good or bad for you and your health has been going on for years. Although differing opinions exist today, it is medically and scientifically proven that eating too much meat increases the risk of a variety of health problems.

Here are 10 negative effects of eating too much meat on your body:

1. Bone weakness

Excessive amounts of protein (such as eating too much meat) can lead to calcium loss in the body. Calcium is an essential component for healthy bones, and since our body does not produce it on its own, we can only get it from food. Also, meat and sausage can inflame or worsen joint pain.

2. Kidney stones

Animal protein, which we eat primarily through meat and eggs, increases the risk of kidney stones. The purines in protein are broken down into uric acid, which can cause kidney stones if too much uric acid is present. Therefore, doctors advise reducing meat consumption to avoid this painful situation.

3. Weight gain

While it is true that your body needs protein to build muscle, consuming too much can have side effects. If you eat more protein than you need, your body stores the protein as fat. If you eat too much meat, you risk building too much protein in your body.

4. Dehydration

If you eat too much meat, you will produce too much uric acid (see number 2), which can make you more thirsty than usual. To dilute the toxic waste, the kidneys need a lot of water. Not drinking enough water can result in dehydration, as your kidneys must draw water from your body to make urine.

5. Constipation

Meat foods are high in protein but low in fiber. If you are constipated or uncomfortable going to the bathroom, it could be because you are not getting enough fiber. If you eat a lot of meat, make sure you eat plenty of vegetables and fruits to ensure you get the essential fiber.

6. Fatigue

Our digestive system has a much harder time digesting meat than vegetables or fruits. It takes a lot of energy to digest meat, which means you'll run out of energy elsewhere because you're using energy that would otherwise be used for digestion. Therefore, fatigue and fatigue after eating are not uncommon, especially when large amounts of meat are consumed.

7. Bad breath

Meat is high in protein and fat, and a diet high in protein and fat causes the body to produce more ketones. Ketones are released through breathing and have a rather unpleasant odor. Another interesting phenomenon occurs when meat consumption increases.

8. Headache

As explained above, when your body uses the available water in your body to make urine, you may experience dehydration and headaches as a result. This causes the blood to become sticky and gooey, which reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain. Also, the nitrates used to preserve sausages and meat can cause headaches.

9. Heart disease

The cardioprotective effect increases as you eat foods high in fiber. However, if you mainly eat meat (red meat is especially dangerous), you will have too little fiber in your body and high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), which puts you at risk of heart disease.

10. Frequent illness

The saturated fats in red and processed meats don't contain the antioxidants your body needs to fight inflammation. Since antioxidants are mainly found in fruits and vegetables, it is important to eat a balanced diet.

Meat consumption is declining, and vegetarians and vegans (vegans) are becoming more and more popular. Many people have already been persuaded by three strong arguments: health, the environment, and morals. Are you thinking of trying a vegetarian diet too?
