10 facts about the female body

Journalist Gloria Steinem asked in the 1970s what would happen if a man, not a woman, menstruated. She speculated that Steinem would have a far-reaching effect on her medical research, she speculated above all else.

While traditional 'male diseases' such as heart attack are no longer being studied, 'what kind of treatment can be developed for dysmenorrhea and mood swings caused by menstruation?' Such questions will be dealt with urgently.

After all, it was not until the 1990s that 'gender medicine', which does not consider 'human' as a synonym for 'man', was established as a specialized field. Recent interest in gender differences in the body continues to uncover new facts about the female body. Today I'm going to share with you 10 of the most interesting facts.

1. Pregnancy and childbirth

A woman's body undergoes dramatic changes during pregnancy. The changes women experience range from weight gain to changes in body mechanics and posture, to the cervix opening up to 10 cm during childbirth.

2. Agility

Women have an advantage in terms of agility because, on average, they have less muscle mass than men. The hormone estrogen, which causes muscles to relax faster and better, also affects agility.

3. Read facial expressions

Compared to men, women are better at reading other people's facial expressions.

4. Sensitive skin

Because women's epidermis is significantly thinner than men's, women feel cold more quickly. Also, women's skin is more sensitive to hormones than men's skin. It loses elasticity faster and ages faster. But instead, men have to worry about deep wrinkles later on.

5. Vibrant colors

Women and men also see differences. Men are better at perceiving color contrasts, but women have the upper hand at distinguishing colors.

6. Sensitive to pain

It's surprising, but it's true. Women feel more pain than men. This is also due to hormones: estrogen increases the severity of pain while testosterone decreases it. Nevertheless, it is because of the endorphins released in the process that women still tolerate vaginal labor relatively well.

7. Endurance

Although women may have weaker strength than men, muscle fatigue appears later when performing static and dynamic muscle exercises. It is believed that this is because women have more type 1 muscle fibers. Unlike type 2 muscle fibers, type 1 muscle fibers are responsible for endurance instead of strength and speed.

8. Sweat

Women generally sweat less than men because, on average, they have fewer sweat glands. However, it has also been proven that the amount of sweating varies with body size and not with gender. The taller you are, the more you sweat.

9. Emotional Ups and downs

While hormones make women feel good in the middle of their menstrual cycle, the end of the cycle is especially stressful, and in some cases, they feel like they're just a shadow or a monster. Researchers have even found that brain structure changes with the menstrual cycle.

10. Light Sleep

The quality of sleep is worse for women than men because they sleep better and wake up more easily when there is a sound. One explanation for this is that in the Stone Age, it was the role of women to take care of the well-being of the group. When a baby or small child comes home, a woman's hearing becomes more sensitive.

You can also expand the list above. Not only are women more flexible, more empathetic, and less sweaty, but their left and right brains are also better connected and they talk more. Some of the facts about women are refuted. For example, women generally stay awake long after sex. There are also facts that are volatile. Men also get lighter sleep if they are more involved in raising and caring for their children.
